A
Rich History
The Brick Church was actually founded in 1844, before Wisconsin
was a state! In 1866, the main section of our present facility
was built and the Deacons of the church actually gathered
wheat to purchase the first stove!
Nearby is a small building that was once a one-room schoolhouse
used by the community. Though the church was a Baptist Church
for virtually all of its history, the First Baptist Church
of Walworth was called The Brick Church by the community.
In fact, the church sits at the corner of Brick Church and
Brick School roads today! When it's members today are asked,
"Where do you attend church?" they simply respond, "Brick."
Everyone knows what church they mean!
Until 2002, Brick Church was a member of the American Baptist
Convention of churches. The ABC had determined to agree to
accept the homosexual lifestyle as a person's choice with
no real bearing on their relationship with the Lord. The Brick
Church, like many others throughout Wisconsin, were faced
with a dilemma: remain loyal to Scripture or submit to the
direction of the ABC. Because of it's uncompromising stand
on the authority of Scripture, the church's choice was clear.
In December, 2002, the First Baptist Church of Walworth became
simply Brick Church, an independent, non-denominational fellowship
of believers.
The decision to separate from the American Baptist Convention
was not without difficulty and controversy. Some in the congregation
strongly felt separation from the ABC was not necessary and
opposed the action. When the majority made the final decision,
a good portion of the membership left the church in protest.
A relatively small band of believers were left, knowing in
their heart they had done the right thing, but shaken in their
spirit to have lost friends in the process. Believing that
God would bless their defense of the Scriptures, Brick Church
literally stepped out on its own. Formerly, they had looked
to the convention to help them in times like these. Now, they
only had the Lord to depend on.
